Why These 5 Excuses Stalling Your Adventure Abroad Are Complete BS!
June 11, 2012 in Personal Growth and Travel
Ok I get it you have a job, you have a family, there’s a ton of bills to be paid, blah blah blahhh. I support and understand all those things so I’m not going to try convincing you you’re not really ‘living’ until you’ve taken a Round the World trip or backpacked your way through the wilderness. Heck, I haven’t even done those things (nor am I planning on doing them). I simply want to open your mind that traveling abroad is not as unreachable as you may think and yes, you CAN do it!
“I Have No Time From Work”
Come on, everyone usually gets at least a week of vacation time to spend freely, so use it! Although one week is not nearly enough time to backpack your way through Europe or anything, pick one place you’d love to visit and take at least one vacation every year. There’s nothing wrong with that and that’s much better than just using that week to catch up on housework. The only thing really stopping you from enjoying your time off is your mindset; there’s nothing to over think here, just get up and go!
“Traveling Is Too Expensive”
Yes, I completely agree traveling can get costly. But don’t let that intimidate you completely, do a little bargain hunting on the internet and you are sure to find some great deals.
Airlines are always having some sort of special going on whether it is free air miles or discounted last minute deals; they’re definitely becoming a lot more wallet friendly!
And don’t forget about a savings plan! When you plan ahead and cut out some unnecessary spending tada you have just saved up enough money! If traveling abroad is something you really want to do you have to make it a priority. So perhaps you might not be able to go out as much with your friends for a few months but guaranteed you will create so many more memories on your trip than your daily trip to the bar.
“My Kids Are Too Young”
I know when I was growing up those family vacations were worth every penny! Even those Disney World trips when I was a toddler can still easily be remembered. Yes, I wouldn’t recommend bringing along an infant but it has been done (check out the Ingram family story). If you are unsure about your destination being kid-friendly once again just do a little research on the internet and I’m sure you could even find some traveling families that know all the tricks
“I Don’t Know Any Foreign Languages”
Guess what, neither do I! So far that hasn’t stopped me from traveling anywhere. In fact, if you are an English speaker you have a pretty good chance of getting a teaching internship across the big pond. You can do a little background research on the native language of the country you’re traveling to but it’s not as required as it may have been say, 30 years ago.
“It’s A Scary World Out There”
It honestly makes me laugh how concerned people are when they find out you are traveling abroad but couldn’t care less if you’re going to let’s say NYC. Now I know this may sound crazy to some of you, but I am WAY more afraid to walk around NYC at night than if I were to walk through my neighborhood in Amman, Jordan. Yea guys stare at me when I walk down the street and occasionally I’ll get a few whistles but do you seriously think that wouldn’t happen back in the states? I lived in a pretty small town before and there was no doubt I could find a shooting or gang breakout that happened the night before or in the next town over. Americans especially are so blinded of what’s going on right in front of them and are always so quick to point the finger to some third world country. But I’m here to tell you to just go for it! Obviously with some precautions in certain countries, but don’t hold off on your traveling dreams just because of others’ opinions.
In the words of Jordan Belfort, “The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.”
Have any more bullshit excuses you’d like for me to bust?
Go ahead and comment I guarantee I can change your mind
