Cheap Holiday Destinations in the Philippines

Everyone needs a time off from their usual routines.  That is why holidays simply make us breathe and relax for even just a little while. Holidays are often best spent outside our usual surroundings in order to give us a taste of a new environment that will refresh us, but unfortunately, most of the time we are hindered by our budget.

If you really want to go on a holiday somewhere far from your old usual town, you still can, but you have to plan it very well in order to avoid disasters.  I haven’t been out of the country for my entire life, so I can only suggest you one travel destination – the Philippines.  Our country is like a one-stop shop because you can enjoy a lot of things in just one destination, therefore saving you from loads of expenses and making your stay worthwhile.

Here are a few of the cheapest and coolest spots in the Philippines:  Surigao del Sur, 7-8 hours (1 hour in the plane and 6 hours from airport to Surigao del Sur proper) away from Manila, is a province in Mindanao that is very rich in natural resources.  Its aquatic bounty is one of the main attractions of Surigao del Sur.  The beaches are not polluted and crowded.  It unintentionally and effortlessly gives you a private getaway thus making you feel like you’ve paid for the whole island just for yourself.

You can also enjoy the abundance of tropical fruits and first-class seafood for a very cheap price because they are sold directly in the marketplace by the farmers and fishermen themselves.

You don’t have to pay for unnecessary bills that come along in expensive restaurants.  So when it comes to cheap holidays, Surigao del Sur is light on the budget while still providing a truly unique experience like no other.

Lanao del Norte, 3-4 hours away from Manila (1 hour in the plane and 2 hours from airport to Lanao del Norte proper), is a province in Northern Mindanao known for its diverse cultures and natural resources.  Please don’t get this place mistaken to be full of bombings and terrorists.

Gaining knowledge by visiting this place will erase all the false perceptions.  Aside from its natural resources, it is also rich in historical artifacts from the old tribes of the Mindanao. This place will make your holiday filled with adventures.  You will not leave this place empty-headed.

There are too many tourist hot spots in the Philippines, and I don’t have the time to mention all of them even if I wanted to.  It is also not enough to describe it in words. Words cannot give justice to describe the colors, taste, scent, and thrill of the richness that our country has to offer.  I suggest that you discover it for yourself!

Without bias, I can guarantee you that the Philippines is one of the cheapest yet worthwhile vacation spots in the world. So pack your bags and go have cheap holidays here in the Philippines! I’m sure you’ll list this as one of your favorite destinations, and will have more funds to come and visit again.

@danavalles : i love to go to surigao! Hopefully I can save a lot this year so that I can visit those places. I’ve been to Mindanao twice and Dipolog was my only destination. I went to Dakak and that was it. I’ll have to go back and check out other destinations in my next visits. :)

There are also other places to visit like Bohol, Banawe, Sagada, Vigan and Ilocos Norte. These are popular destinations for a lot of tourists but if you want to go off the beaten track there are still some surprises to discover in these places. Like when I went to Bohol I saw a nice artists enclave in Panglao with local artists. This is the same in Palawan. There are also interesting places near Manila like the province of Rizal, Batangas, Lucena and Laguna where you can do a 2-3-day trip of heritage and artists sites. Let me know if you guys are interested, I can hook you up!

Thanks for the comments guys! What i’d love to do next as part of my “no cost” holiday experience is to go backpacking on some mountainous areas and gatecrash to some local houses there for meals.. it may sound a bit rude for others, but i will prove here the hospitality of Filipinos. I will learn from their experience, learn from their health care status, and do a little medical mission.. :)

Just curious- (an easy hop from Hawaii where I spend a lot of time, and perhaps a place where a friend of mine from China could meet me…)- how much do inexpensive hotels cost? Meals? As in, what do you budget for a day of travel?
